Back To Bed Opens 50th Mattress Store in Evanston IL, Attributes Success To Listening To Clients
In 2001 Back To Bed opened its first location in Geneva Illinois as a one-store operation, but quickly grew to a handful of locations. Now Back To Bed has opened its 50th Chicago-land store at 1710 Sherman Ave in Evanston IL. Principle Glenn Haneberg attributes the company’s success to the consultative and relaxed shopping experience.
Glenn Haneberg knew there had to be a better way. Back in 1990, when he started in the mattress business working as a salesman, mattresses were being sold as commodities. In those days, the primary emphasis was on pointing out the latest and greatest features instead of trying to determine what would ultimately provide the customer with a better night’s sleep. As Haneberg recalls, “When other salesmen were talking about how many coils a mattress had, I saw an opportunity to relate to the customer in a different way. By first finding out their needs and problems, I was able to sell mattresses as products that were genuinely health-oriented and could have a positive impact on so many important facets of a person’s life. It made all the difference in the world.” Haneberg later applied this consultative approach at Back To Bed stores with good results.
Back To Bed’s company slogan is ‘Make Yourself Comfortable!’. With an array of comfortable mattresses, massage chairs, and zero-gravity recliners it isn’t difficult to tell why. Veteran salesperson & Chicago Area Manager Kip Wilkinson from the Chicago IL South Loop Mattress Store Location explains, “Back To Bed is best known for helping people find good sleep, at a price they can afford, in a pressure-free environment. Nothing beats a good night’s sleep and that’s what we’re here to help you find.”
Starting with one mattress store in Geneva, Illinois in 2001, Back To Bed has quickly grown to 50 stores throughout the Chicago area that are independently owned and operated by Glenn Haneberg and his business partner Vito Favia. Both born and raised in Chicago, they understand the nuances of the Chicago-land marketplace and are the perfect complement to each other: Haneberg knows what it takes to sell mattresses, while Favia is the company’s financial expert. He worked as a CPA, with a background in both accounting and managing acquisitions in other industries, before teaming with Haneberg. That explains another reason for Back To Bed’s explosive growth; they were able to successfully acquire locations from a number of Chicago’s notable mattress retailers, including The Bed Shop, Mattress Giant and Bed Town.
Despite the added competition in the Chicago area mattress marketplace co-owner Vito Favia is confident in the future growth of this locally owned and operated company, “We do plan on making a big push in 2014. We have some added competition from out-of-towners, but we are planning on opening new stores and continuing the company’s healthy growth.”
